Dispatches from the deep
Lore, reviews and builds from the ocean floor of gaming
We play deliberately and write at length. Every week Crimson Rune Citadel publishes one deep review, one lore essay, and one build guide — no scores under 200 words, no hype, no filler.
A note from the founder
I started this blog because scores felt hollow
Crimson Rune Citadel began in a Prahran share-house in 2019, after I rage-quit a 400-word review of a game I'd poured 90 hours into. Numbers can't hold that. So we write the long version instead — the mechanics that click on hour 12, the quiet room that stays with you for years.
Today a small crew of four covers RPGs, roguelikes and the strange indies that slip past the storefronts. We take no publisher money and buy every game we cover. If it's here, we finished it.

How we cover games
Not your average review site
A side-by-side look at how Crimson Rune Citadel differs from the usual scroll of scored reviews.
| What matters | Crimson Rune Citadel | Typical review site |
|---|---|---|
| Time before verdict | Full campaign finished | Often first 4–6 hours |
| Publisher funding | None — we buy every game | Review codes & ads |
| Format | 2,000+ word essays | Score + summary |
| Cadence | 3 considered pieces / week | Daily news churn |
| Spoiler policy | Gated, opt-in sections | Inconsistent |
Finished-first reviews
Nothing goes up until the credits roll. Verdicts land with the weight of the whole thing behind them.
Build guides that work
Every guide is tested on a fresh save on the hardest difficulty before we recommend it. No theorycrafting from patch notes.
Lore worth the dive
We map the stories others skim — timelines, cut content, and the themes that make a world feel lived-in.
What readers say
Rated by the people who actually read
Based on 1,284 reader ratings
The Tidebreaker review talked me out of a refund and into my favourite game of the year. Nobody else bothered to reach act three before scoring it.
The tidecaller build guide got me through the final boss on my third try. Everything was tested — no vague "just stack crit" nonsense.
I subscribe for the lore essays alone. The Rune Wars piece made me replay a game I'd shelved for two years. Worth every cent of the annual plan.
No hype, no publisher spin, no clickbait. Just four people who clearly love games and finish them. The internet needs more of this.
